Flesh from Forage

Luing Cattle Society

Welcome to the Luing Cattle Society, the official body dedicated to promoting and supporting the Luing breed. Luings are a resilient and efficient suckler cow tailored for the hill and upland regions of British agriculture. Established in 1965, our society is committed to advancing the breed's development, assisting breeders, and ensuring the Luing continues to meet the evolving needs of the beef industry.

The Luing breed was developed by the Cadzow brothers on the Isle of Luing in the 1940s, combining Beef Shorthorn and Highland cattle to create a cow that thrives in challenging environments. Renowned for its hardiness, docility, and exceptional mothering abilities, the Luing efficiently converts low-quality forage into quality beef, making it a cost-effective choice for modern farmers.

Our society offers a range of services to support breeders and promote the breed, including:

  • Membership Opportunities: Join a community of dedicated breeders and access exclusive resources.

  • Sales and Events: Participate in our annual sales and events to network and expand your herd.

  • Educational Resources: Stay informed with our publications and updates on best practices in breeding and herd management.

Explore our website to learn more about the Luing breed, discover upcoming events, and find out how to become a member of the Luing Cattle Society. Together, we can continue to enhance the sustainability and profitability of beef production in challenging environments.
